Plus, fun LEGO ideas you’ll love!
If LEGOs have taken over your floors, your sofa cushions, your car, and every random corner of your home… you are not alone! Parents love them, kids adore them, but those tiny bricks multiply fast and can make any room feel chaotic.
Whether your kids are building their first Duplo tower or tackling the $999 Star Wars Death Star, LEGOs are here to stay, and they play such an important role in creativity and learning.
At Getting it Done Organizing, we believe the best systems are the ones your family will actually use. When it comes to LEGOs, that means keeping things organized without taking away the fun of building and imagining!
Why We Love LEGOs (Even When They’re Everywhere!)
LEGOs aren’t just toys, they help kids develop fine-motor skills, spatial awareness, patience, and creativity. Every snap of a brick builds confidence and imagination!
LEGOs build more than towers... they build creativity, focus, and confidence!
Kids learn balance, planning, and problem-solving all while having fun. And let’s be honest, watching them proudly show off their latest creation is the best part!
So How Do You Organize LEGOs?
There’s no one-size-fits-all answer! Every family has a different play style, space, and tolerance for tiny pieces underfoot. Our Dallas-based team of home organizers usually recommends four main ways to organize LEGOs:
1. The General Sorting System (Our Go-To!)
Simple, easy, and realistic. Use a few large bins or drawers to separate broad categories — one for bricks, one for accessories, one for minifigures.
This system is easy to clean up and keeps creativity flowing. Kids rediscover old pieces every time they dig through a bin!
Keep it simple. The best LEGO system is one your kids can actually keep up with!
We love these clear stackable bins from The Container Store for younger builders. They’re lightweight, durable, easy to label and are sold in a variety of sizes. Add picture labels so even toddlers know where everything belongs. We love the Brother ColAura Color Photo and Label Printer!
Another great option is using lidded boxes because they make cleanup simple, prevent spills, and let you carry sets from room to room without a trail of bricks behind you!

2. The Micro Sorting System (Not our favorite but some clients and families swear by this, so to each his own!)
Some families love sorting by size or type, like separating plates, slopes, and wheels. While it looks great, it can take away the fun of free play and is a lot to maintain.
If your child loves following directions or rebuilding official sets, go for it! Try drawer systems like IKEA Trofast or modular units from The Container Store. They keep everything tidy and visible.
3. The Hybrid System (For Real Life!)
Our favorite middle ground! Keep general bins for most bricks and micro-sort only the favorites, like wheels, windows, or mini figures.
We also love using a shallow bin or rolling cart for in-progress projects. That way, masterpieces don’t get lost before they’re finished!
The best organizing system is the one your kids will actually use… not the one that looks perfect on Pinterest!
4. Sorting by Color
Yes, some families really do this– everything is grouped by red, blue, yellow, green, and so on. It looks beautiful in photos, but if we’re being honest… life’s too short for that level of micro-sorting!
If your child loves it and it helps them build, go for it! But at Getting it Done Organizing, we’d rather keep systems simple and flexible so kids can focus on the fun part: building and creating!

5. Open Bins for Toddlers (Keep It Simple!)
If your toddler is loving learning and playing with LEGO® DUPLO®, keep storage easy with a big open-top bin. DUPLO bricks are larger and perfect for scooping, dumping, and building, so an open bin lets little ones grab pieces on their own and clean them up just as easily. No sorting needed, just simple, fun, and toddler-friendly!
Displaying and Storing Finished LEGO Sets

If your child builds something amazing, show it off! You can purchase LEGO display cases and place them on top of a shelf or dresser. When it’s time to start fresh, break it down and store the pieces in zip-top bags or zipper pouches so you can rebuild later.
If you need more storage, IKEA’s PAX, KALLAX, and Billy Bookcase systems are all Getting It Done–approved favorites for playrooms!
Fun Extra LEGO Tips We Love
Subscribe to the FREE LEGO Magazine! Kids get tons of creative ideas and can even submit photos of their builds!
Try the Brickit app. Snap a photo of your LEGO pile and the app will scan your pieces, find what you have, and show you build ideas using the exact bricks already in your collection.
If your kids love LEGOs and you’re local to Dallas-Fort Worth, the LEGOLAND Discovery Center is such a cool spot to explore! It’s an awesome place for kids to get creative, see incredible builds up close, and let their imagination run wild.

What If You’re Ready to Part with Some LEGOS?

If your collection has outgrown your space, here’s what we suggest:
Donate: Fill XL Ziploc bags and drop them at a local thrift store. There’s always a child who would love to get LEGO pieces as a holiday gift!
Sell: Check eBay for the going rate per pound, bag up mixed pieces, and sell through your neighborhood trade page. People can Venmo and pick them up from your porch. Easy and clutter-free!
