Are you scratching your head as to how to organize your receipts? If you are like most people, you probably have receipts everywhere, stuffed in your purse, jammed into a junk drawer, or in a pile on a countertop. Receipt disorganization can cause a lot of stress as you rack your brain searching for the right one. Being unorganized can cost you money when you can't find a receipt for a return, leaving you stuck with a costly and unwanted item!
There are many ways to organize receipts. Check out these three ways to tackle receipt organization and decide which one is right for you.
1. GO RETRO
Organize your receipts the 'old fashioned' way by keeping the paper! Store them in a file cabinet that is easily accessible. Label separate folders for each month of the year, plus one for major purchases. They do not have to be neat and fancy but can be if you want to take the time. Stash your receipts in here each time you come home from shopping.
Another receipt storage solution for smaller spaces is an accordion file folder. Using the same idea, label each slot with a month of the year and one for major purchases. Keep this handy so you can quickly slip in the receipts when you return from shopping.
2. GO DIGITAL
Another way to organize your receipts is digitally. Instead of keeping all the paper, have receipts emailed to you when possible. When you can't have it emailed, scan it with your phone and email it to yourself.
There are plenty of apps available to scan and organize on your device if that is easier for you. If you have an iPhone, you can scan straight from the notes app and keep it in subfolders in Notes like on your computer.
Once your receipts are in your computer, create a Receipt folder. Since the emails are dated, you can save the receipts in a file labeled with the year or create sub-folders by month. Consider creating a separate sub-folder for major purchases to find these items more easily.
3. GO FOR A COMBO
With organization of any kind, there is no one right way to do it; the same is true for receipts. Using a combination of paper and digital receipt organization may be exactly the right way for you! You could go digital with retail purchases making returns and exchanges easier from your phone and you can go paper with monthly bills and larger purchases. This eliminates to need to scan everything. The key to receipt organization success is creating a system that works for you and sticking to it!
No one wants to spend a lot of time on receipts. You want to be able to find them when you need them quickly. Organization does not have to be pretty to work. You only need a system that you can easily maintain. All organization requires some maintenance, so calendar in a throw-away session 1- 2 times a year to stay on top of it. Create your receipt organization plan by following our tips and tame your receipts for good!
